Geophysics

Students of Geophysics, a degree programme unique in Poland, are prepared to design and conduct geophysical surveys, explore deposits of ores, minerals, crude oil and natural gas, assess natural and human-induced hazards, and investigate geological structures.

By completing the programme, you will acquire, among other skills, the ability to use specialist software for the visualisation and processing of geophysical data and to interpret survey results.

Graduates of the Geophysics programme may work as:

  • geophysicists, including in geological, mining, engineering and drilling positions;
  • specialists conducting geophysical and geological-mining surveys;
  • designers of systems for processing and interpreting geophysical and geological-mining data;
  • specialists responsible for operating seismometric networks in hard coal and copper mines;
    specialists preparing documentation for geophysical and geological-mining surveys;

Graduate Profile

After completing the first-cycle degree programme, you will be able to:

  • conduct geophysical surveys for exploration and engineering purposes, including investigating geological structures; searching for deposits of natural gas, crude oil, groundwater and rock raw materials; examining near-surface structures such as landslides and construction ground; and assessing natural and human-induced hazards, particularly those related to energy and raw material extraction;
  • determine the relationship between geophysical measurement results and the physical and geometrical properties of the rock medium;
  • apply geological and environmental knowledge when interpreting geophysical data;
  • carry out projects using modern IT tools for the visualisation and preliminary processing of geophysical data;
  • communicate in a foreign language at B2 level and use specialist terminology in geophysics;
  • work effectively as part of a team.

After additionally completing the second-cycle degree programme in Geophysics, you will be able to:

  • independently design and conduct geophysical surveys using appropriate research methods;
  • independently operate geophysical research equipment;
  • perform qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the results using modern software;
  • describe and analyse geophysical parameters measured using different methods, taking into account variations in the physical properties of rocks and the dynamics of the physical processes involved.
