Geotourism

By completing the Geotourism degree programme, you will be prepared for a career in the rapidly developing tourism industry, with a particular focus on the use of geological heritage resources.

In addition to gaining a solid foundation in Earth sciences, you will develop skills related to the operation of the tourism market, especially the planning and organisation of tourism projects. You will also learn how to use geological sites, mining heritage and cultural heritage in practice to create new tourist attractions, geotourism products and geoeducation initiatives.

Graduates of the Geotourism programme may work in a wide range of sectors related to tourism, nature conservation and heritage management. Possible career paths include:

  • tourism and geotourism specialist or planner;
  • geological and mining heritage management specialist;

Graduate Profile

As a graduate of the first-cycle degree programme, you will be able to apply fundamental knowledge from the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities in the tourism industry. In particular, you will be able to:

  • plan, organise and deliver themed tourism events;
  • apply knowledge of psychology and sociology in the work of tour leaders and guides;
  • develop elements of promotional campaigns for tourist attractions;
  • design elements of tourism site development;
  • describe and explain relationships between geological structure, landform, history and land use;
  • plan sustainable tourism in protected areas;
  • manage a tourism business in accordance with applicable law.

After completing the second-cycle degree programme, you will be able to apply advanced and comprehensive knowledge in geotourism. In particular, you will be able to:

  • analyse the complex factors shaping geodiversity and its use in tourism;
  • document and assess geological and other abiotic natural sites for tourism purposes;
  • deliver geoeducation activities for different groups of visitors;
  • develop geotourism products based on the value of geological and abiotic natural heritage;
  • design tourism infrastructure and visitor facilities at geosites;
  • develop and implement territorial development strategies using geological and abiotic natural heritage;
  • apply multimedia technologies in tourism promotion and visitor information.
